Maine-isms
This is just a fun little page explainin some a the things heard and said around here on the daily.
Some of em might be used in your neck a the woods, but I bet some aren’t.
“Hard tellin-not knowin”….(Pronounced Hahd) – a response to the unknown answer to a question. “Suppose it’s gonna rain today? Hahd tellin not knowing.
“All stove up”….Beat up bad but, like this…” I run my truck off the road and now she’s all stove up!” Then there’s the “all stove to hell”…or “stove to smithereens”. And another version….”Geezum, it was stavin busy at Dunkys this mornin”.
Which leads to “Geezum”.. …An exclamation. Like as above. Often times coupled with “Crow”. “Geezum Crow, get the hell off a that roof fore ya break sumpin”.
“Dooryard”….(Dooryahd) The front yard area around the door. “Crikey, how the hell many cars he gut parked in his dooryard?”
“Friggin”…this is used as both negative and positive in many different forms and is quite versatile.
“That friggin cat just upset his whole bowl a crunchies on my clean floor”…..or……”Man, that blueberry pie was some friggin good!” Let’s not leave out Wicked Friggin….. “We’re gonna get a wicked friggin snow storm this weekend”. And then something can be a wicked frig…… “Fillin out them tax forms is a wicked frig! And this…”I just wound up that ball a yarn and now it’s all frigged up.” How bout….”What the frig has she done to her hair now?” See?… Versatile.
“Wicked”…this one is also versatile. It can be used in combination with “Friggin” as noted above or just on its own. “That new snow sled ya gut there is wicked sweet” or “That new neighbor lady is turning out ta be a wicked pain in the ass”. It can even just be a one word response to a exclamation such as “Wicked friggin hot taday”….answer/comment….
”Wicked”
“Muckle”…to grab onto or hold tight. “That friggin dog muckled a hold a my leg”…or…”Muckle onta that wrench and don’t let go til I tell yah”.
“Puckers”…(Puckahs)…bushes. Maybe they have thorns, maybe not. “Geezum, Elsa stepped on the gas instead a the brake a put er right into the puckahs”
“Dear” or “Deer”…A term of endearment or a doe-eyed, 4 legged critter (either way, pronounced “De-ah”-2 syllables). “That friggin deah ran right into the side a my truck” or “Sure Deah, I’ll go ta the store for yah”
“Cap”…Short for Captain and is used in greeting whether your a captain or not. “Hey Cap, how’s it goin?”or.. “Whassup Cap?” Can be used to make your point a bit stronger like…”I tell ya what Cap, that dude pissed me off no end”.
“Right out Straight”….You are busy. “It was some friggin busy at the restaurant today…right out straight I was all day!” Or your schedule is full….”How’s July lookin for yah Cap?” “Right out Straight!”
“Cunnin”….Something cute. “Aww, Jackie’s new baby is some cunnin’, ain’t he?”
“Ass over Teakettle” and “Diggah”… Falling. This sentence’ll explain it all. “I took a major diggah and went ass over teakettle down the cella stairs-stove myself all to hell”
“Yessah”…I’m not entirely sure on this one but to me it’s the melding of “yes” and “sir”. “You going the fair this weekend?”…..”Yessah!”
“Fair to Middlin”…Doing ok. “Hey Cap, how you doin taday?” ….”Oh, fair to middlin’ I guess”
I’m gonna leave it right here for now. There’s a shit ton more a these and I hope yah learn a few on your own if your’e up this way.
Make sure to stop by and say Hey!!
