Maine’s Official State Berry
What’s as quintessential Maine as Lobster? Blueberries of course! We love them so much, we made them the official state berry. The perfect ending to any meal, especially one that includes Maine Lobster.
From late July until early September the Blueberries are rockin!! Pickin’ ’em ain’t that much fun cuz a the skeeters but one has to do what one has to do. I hand pick so I’m only gonna be able to get so many.
The commercial growers hire workers who rake ’em. A rake is like a scoop with long teeth that’s passed through the blueberry bushes. It also grabs some of the leaves so the berries have to go through the winnowing process. Air blown onto the berries separates the leaves from the berries. Bam, perfect berries all gathered up into those square, green paper cartons.
Maine Blueberries are awesome sprinkled on your mornin’ cereal, in pancakes and waffles, baked into muffins, muddled into cocktails, made into syrup, sauce and jam and the list goes on and on.
I like makin Blueberry everything! I’ll highlight a few for yah.
Maine Blueberry Syrup – pour it over pancakes or waffles for a breakfast treat. It also makes some lowly biscuits and whipped cream into a show stopping shortcake and can transform your lemonade into somethin’ special….even without vodka!
Maine Blueberry Gingerbread is another one of my favorites to make. It doesn’t get much better than molasses, ginger, cinnamon and wild, Maine blueberries baked up in an old-fashioned treat!
And let’s not forget Maine Blueberry Pie, THE Maine dessert. The best place to get wicked good blueberry pie is right here in Maine! Next time you are lucky enough to be in Vacationland (aka Maine), you can find homemade Maine Blueberry Pie right here at the Sargentville restaurant.
